Two-thousand nine has come and gone. With it, the door closes and the slate is wiped clean of the problems and concerns of the last year. It brings the entrance of the newest decade of the millennia.

Within the first few seconds and minutes of 2010, resolutions and goals were made. Some may have been to spend more time with family and friends, be fit, lose weight, or to quit smoking. While others vowed to enjoy life, quit drinking, get out of debt, learn something new, help others, and get organized.

Millions of people made these goals for themselves, only to have them broken in a few hours. Even though we're 27 days into the New Year, we, as students, have the opportunity to create new goals for ourselves for this new semester, year, and decade.

A new semester equals a new start. We have new classes, new books, and new professors; everything is fresh and different. Now is our chance to make the most of it. In the past, you may have fallen short of your academic goals or lost the ease of getting A's as you did in high school, but now you can change that.

You can make every excuse in the book of why you haven't turned over a new leaf. You can keep procrastinating and push the first step for completing your goal off until tomorrow. But make tomorrow today. Start by taking the first step toward completing your goals by committing to your goals. Set a realistic and measurable goal with a specific plan on how to achieve it.

Put inspirational notes in your planner, stock up on post-it notes and leave yourself reminders to keep yourself on the right track. Don't be too hard on yourself. Allow for a day of backsliding or a break, but get right back on the horse and don't give up.

Get off to a good start with your professors. Don't skip class, pay attention, and try not to fall asleep. On days you don't have an overload of classes, make a "to do" list and end your day with a sense of accomplishments as you check another thing off your list. Leave the TV or Xbox off.

This might be difficult for some, but try to limit your Facebook visits. When you need a break, go outside and get some fresh air to clear your head, then go back and hit the books. Make sure you get adequate sleep so your mind stays sharp and your immune system stays strong.

Make the most of your second semester here at Ripon College. Set your sights on reaching your goal of summer vacation. Who knows? Maybe this semester will be different and you will sail by with flying colors. Are you ready to take the first step?
