Noted poet to perform tonight
Patricia Smith will give a poetry reading tonight in Great Hall from 7:30-8:30 p.m. as part of Ripon's Visiting Writers Series. Her most recent book "Blood Dazzler," which was inspired by Hurricane Katrina, was a nominee for the National Book Award. Smith is also an acclaimed slam poet. She was featured on HBO's Def Poetry Jam and won the National Poetry Slam four times. According to Professor of English David Graham, she is, "one of the most compelling 'live' readers" he has ever heard.
Senior cap and gown party
With graduation looming in the not-too-distant future, the annual cap and gown party will be held March 27 at 7 p.m. in Great Hall for all graduating seniors. The event organized by the Alumni Relations Office will be an opportunity for seniors to network with all alumni in attendance. Prizes such as Ripon apparel and diploma frames will be given out and there will be free beer.
ELP looking for new students
The Ethical Leadership program is currently taking applications for the coming academic year. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, March 31. Involvement in the program allows students to earn two or three-year certifications in addition to their degrees. As part of the certification process students work in project teams, discuss ethical issues and complete service learning projects. Any questions can be directed to Lindsay Blumer, executive director of the Ethical Leadership Program.
Po Go majors present theses
Seniors majoring in Politics and government will present their final capstone projects tomorrow and Thursday, March 26 at 10:10 a.m. in the East Hall Little Theatre. Presenters will recap their research and then field any questions from the audience. The topics to be addressed by various students cover a wide spectrum of political issues, ranging from domestic policy to foreign affairs.
Ride board available on Portal
Whether students are stranded in Ripon without cars or want to reduce their carbon footprints by hitching a ride home for spring break with a classmate, they can use the electronic ride board found under the Campus Life tab on the myRipon portal to find someone headed in the same direction. As an added incentive, Student Services has collaborated with EGOR to award a $50 gas card three times per semester to a randomly chosen student who makes ride posts to the forum.
Letter campaign for St. Jude
Students are invited to write letters to friends and family asking for donations to benefit the St. Jude Research Hospital. The event will take place Tuesday, March 31 from noon-10 p.m. in the pub. Anyone is welcome to attend. Students are just requested to come with as many addresses as possible. Form letters and envelopes will be provided. The hospital aims to treat and cure its young patients but must rely heavily on personal contributions.
